Search for “insoles” and you get two entirely different things sold under one name. It's worth knowing which one you're looking at.
A medical orthotic
Prescribed by a doctor or orthotist after an examination. It is a treatment device: made against a diagnosis and intended to act on a specific problem: a deformity, pain, a diabetes-related foot issue, a post-injury condition.

A comfort insole
A product, not treatment. Your foot is scanned, the insole is designed to that geometry and made. The goal is that the shoe fits your foot rather than an average foot.
It suits someone who stands or walks all day and whose feet are done by evening; whose two feet differ; who wants the same support in several different shoes; or for whom an off-the-shelf insole simply doesn't sit right.
Why a scan rather than a foam impression
The traditional route is standing in a foam box, casting it in plaster, then forming the insole over the cast. It works. But foam and plaster are physical objects: they take up space, they degrade, and they aren't there a year later.
A scan is a file. If you need a second pair a year on, or the same support in different shoes, you don't come back in. The geometry exists and the second pair is cheaper.
It also means you're not waiting for an appointment. The scan itself takes a couple of minutes.
For workshops and shops
If you already make insoles, the scanning doesn't have to happen in your building. Send the customer to me and you get back a clean file to work from. More on that on the foot scanning page.
